Description
The thematic material is from a work by the Cornish composer George Lloyd (1913-1998). In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I visited George in his London apartment several times and we found a mutual liking of each other’s music. I gave him a copy of my Symphony for Winds and Percussion and he gave me a little piano work that my wife had told him she was very fond of titled The Lily-Leaf and the Grasshopper. We both offered our work as not only a gift but also something that might offer ideas that might be used in a new composition. The Romanza for Piano and Strings is my homage to what George simply called his “gift of tunes”. It is unfortunate that George died before I completed this “fantasy” on his enchanting melody. I hope that in this setting for piano and strings I have done it justice.
