Festive Fiddle Dance

Festive Fiddle Dance is a jubilant celebration of string playing. This delightful winner of the 2003 Texas Orchestra Directors Association Competition Contest offers something for everyone while serving as a remarkable teaching tool. Technical opportunities facilitate skill development of harmonics, grace notes, multiple stops (double, triple, quadruple), pizzicato (left, right), bowing articulation, upper positions, dynamic contrasts and tempo variances. Thematic interweaving between string sections encourages advancement in fundamental chamber music skills. Ability levels range from middle through high school and beyond with simple adjustments in tempo and upper positions. This crowd-pleaser develops a sense of energy, precision, style and musicianship. It invites participation from all string sections – no one plays “second fiddle” or “sits on the bench.” Melodic themes are shared from one section to another, weaving back and forth in dance-like conversational exchanges. Scale drills found at the conclusion of each part are a helpful way to prepare technique in advance. Careful attention to dynamics, balance, bowing articulation, vibrant sound, tempo and key changes will ensure optimum enjoyment and performance.
