Description
This polka should be played with rhythmic care. Take the time to have fun with the ritards and abrupt pauses. The middle pizzicato section is played using the fleshy part of the finger over the fingerboard. First violins, cellos, and bass have passages with limited position work. Fingerings have been added to provide a reference for the Director. Although not marked, half position should be considered for the first violin part in measures five, seven, nine, eleven, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-nine, and thirty (low first finger on the F and a low second finger on the B). Optional third violin and piano parts have been included.
Johann Strauss (1825-1899) and Josef Strauss (1827-1870) were sons of Johann Strauss Sr. They followed in their father’s path of writing and performing dance music during the mid 1800’s. Their rivalry continued with increasing success after their father’s death in 1849. They often toured together in Russia and Germany.
