Go Down Moses and All God’s Chillun Got Wings has been arranged as contrasting movements. Contrasting parts provide a variety of distinctive melody lines to challenge the development of each section. Go Down Moses should be played in a stately manner with detail given to the flowing contrapuntal lines. All God’s Chillun Got Wings should be played very upbeat. Dissonance in the rhythmic ostinato is intentional and should be played with confidence and a steady tempo. The melody should be played with a short detached bow stroke. Strict adherence to divisi throughout will result in a richer harmonic texture. First violins, cellos, and basses have passages with limited position work. It is recommended that second violins play measures 106 and 107 in half-position. Fingerings have been added to provide a reference for the Director. The sumbol “-1” is backward extension. Optional third violin and piano parts have been included.
