Description

George Frideric Handel’s Presto from Concerto Grosso Opus 6, No. 5 has been arranged for string orchestra. Melodic interplay has been written to give each section equal importance. The first and second violin sections have been given the solo parts from the concerto grosso. First violins have limited third position passages. The cello and bass sections have limited position work. Viola and third violin parts have some half position measures 22 and 74 through 79 to facilitate passage work. Sixteenth notes should be played with a vigorous middle to upper half bow stroke to achieve maximum excitement. Measures that have three eight notes like in measure 8 should be played detached. When finally worked up to tempo, the 3/8 meter should have a feel of one beat per measure. The ritard in measure 143 should be taken only at the end. Likewise, the double up bow in this measure should be done only when taking the ritard. The second violins are the one exception, they should bow it as marked. Fingerings have been added to provide a reference for the Director. The symbol “-I” indicates a backward extension and the symbol “+4” indicates a fourth finger extension. Optional third violin and piano parts have been included.
