Description
Chanteys are work songs whose purpose was to help the men aboard ship work together. A good chanteyman was indeed valuable and rarely unemployed.
Different tasks had different songs. For example, there was a song for weighing anchor, and one for hoisting the heavy sails, etc.
Their exact origin is difficult to trace although many came about during the growth of the cotton trade. We do know that one of the songs in this suite,
Blow The Man Down, originated on the Black Ball Line, a pioneer of modern shipping.
