Description
This work contains a variety of styles of Russian music. The opening section uses traditional liturgical music from the Russian Orthodox Church, beginning with an anthem in the choral style of the 19th century, followed by a monophonic chant. If desired, this can be played by a solo cellist. The rhythm of the chant can be quite free, with care given to phrasing. A short canonic interlude leads to a moment of Russian folksong, followed by the familiar tune we know as “Meadowlands.” The closing section is a setting of the Russian National Anthem in which I have chosen to present a subdued hymn-like quality with the melody first in the celli, then moving to the upper strings as the work ends with a stirring, grandiose statement of the anthem’s final refrain.
Some fingerings have been indicated which will lead to a more musical performance. Special attention to dynamics and articulations will also enhance the result. Some liberty with tempo, especially around cadence points, is certainly permissible.
This work will enhance any concert program in addition to providing young players a chance to work on their positions, bowing skills and tone production.
