Description
A Hebrides Legend is an original work for young string orchestra which recalls a visit to these rugged islands off the western coast of Scotland.
The music begins with an introductory phrase of a Scottish Folksong called “Over the Sea to Skye,” with accompanying tremolos adding a misty effect. The first main section, in a rolling 6/8 meter with a Celtic dance feel, suggests the persistent rocking of a small boat in the ocean. The players will enjoy the alternating 6/8 and 3/4 rhythms and the rugged, robust style suggested by the key of e minor.. As the melody moves to the lower strings, the violins accompany with an extended passage of off-the-string eighth notes.
The tempo and style relax a bit at “F” although the beat pulse should not change significantly. This wistful tune in G major with hints of bagpipes is reminiscent of Scottish folksong. Work to achieve expressive dynamics in the melodic lines as well as in the viola countermelody. At letter “I’ the song takes on the character of a chorale, leading to a return of the opening material. As the work reaches its conclusion, the two melodies are heard together, in both major and minor modes, ending in G major.
Like all folk tunes, this music depends on a clean yet relaxed bowing style for the best effect. In the 6/8 sections, dotted quarters and longer should be played with a full bow. Quarters and eighths should be played with much less bow, always with a clean attack. The eighth notes should come off the string slightly. A broad, singing tone with vibrato and a smooth bow style should be the goals for the middle section.
