Overture in C

Description

Overture in C is a contemporary work written in a melodic manner. It embraces no key signature, moving through several keys before concluding in C. Nothing pictorial is intended; it is absolute music. The composition begins energetically with a brass fanfare-like statement embellished by woodwinds, leading into the opening thematic material. A brief development section is followed by a re-statement of the opening measures in a truncated form. Next is a pastoral theme, played by woodwinds and incorporating a strong countermelody. Now a heroic theme is heard. Then a traditional section occurs in which the percussion are prominent; the full ensemble joins in. The heroic theme is played once more, this time in a grandioso manner. Following that, a brief woodwind passage leads to a stately coda. The work ends brilliantly.
