Description

Cesar Franck completed the composition of his only symphony in 1888, when he was nearly sixty-six years old. He was a professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory of Music and a respected figure in the musical world.

The symphony grew to be one of the favorites in the symphonic repertoire, and the best loved of Franck’s works. It has been described as “the majestic, plastic and MOST beautiful symphony. It’s workmanship is solid, and it’s themes are manifestations of ideal beauty.”

The symphony opens with a Lento, a majestic introduction in which the principle subject of the movement is stated by the basses, a theme curiously reminiscent of a motive from Wagner.

The Lento builds great dramatic suspense, growing in intensity and mystery until finally, the Allegro bursts forth triumphantly. Franck’s symphony was far ahead of his contemporaries. From the harmonic viewpoint, today’s listener becomes charmed with Franck’s chromaticism and his fluid use of tonality. From the melodic viewpoint, Franck’s melodies are gorgeous and most satisfying for the listener to hear.
