Description

Fanfare and Fugue, a brass sextet for two trumpets, tenor trombone, bass trombone, baritone and tuba, is designed more to display good blend, tonguing and pitch rather than test the technical prowess of the player. This composition employs a rich texture of sounds (based on whole-tone scales), with a three part fugue in octaves, and some rather challenging intervals.

NOTE TO THE CONDUCTOR

This piece is constructed from two separate whole-tone scales of six notes each: one set starting on C, the other on D flat. On each note of the scale a major triad is employed to provide the various harmonies: C – E – G, D – F sharp – A, etcetera from set One; D flat – F- A flat, E flat – G – B flat, etcetera from set two. In actuality, we have a twelve tonic situation with form, as opposed to a twelve tone random row. Staying within one set at a time allows a certain consistency of sound. Moving from one set to another makes for modulatory motion. The three part fugue consists of the two related instruments carrying their melody in octaves.

Instrumentation: 2 Trumpets, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone Baritone & Tuba
