Description
In its title the Round ‘n Round overture makes reference to the use of two melodies familiar to early Americana: Round and Round Old Joe Clark and Row, Row, Row Your Boat. The composition is off to a rousing start that suggests the basic material with irregular rhythmic interruptions. A chromatic flurry, and the rhythm becomes regular as the first tune appears in simple folk style. The color changes at every turn from flowing woodwinds to full ensemble in staccato fashion. A bold motive is introduced, allowing the tune to be playfully exploited in fragments. The second tune appears first in a four-part round and is developed with interesting key relationships. The two themes seemingly grow together, and played simultaneously form a robust grandioso and finale.
