Description
Several great arrangements of Russian folk tunes have come and gone during the last forty years or so. Some of the best are out of print. This arrangement offers a new mix of some attractive and unique tunes from the rich culture of Eastern Europe.
A 12 measure introduction transports us to the “steppes” of southern Russia. (A steppe is a plain without trees, but not near a lake or river and usually covered with short grasses. The world’s largest zone of all steppes is found in Russia.) A beautiful chorale follows which truly embodies the Russian spirit with its dark harmonies. This tune comes to us from Tchaikovsky’s Op. 39, (an album of piano pieces for children) No. 24 which is entitled “In a Church”.
The Allegro section weaves traditional Russian folk tunes into a dramatic tapestry. Two melodies are presented, one in G major and the other in g minor. Students will get experience in reading accidentals and how these parallel keys are related. All instruments are given interesting parts and participate in musical dialogue or “conversation”.
Subtitles are provided to help students create images with the music. Hopefully students will create their own legends by connecting the scenes and responding to the musical elements. They can personalize their stories even more by creating and naming characters.
The dramatic flavor of “Slavonic Legends” makes it a great festival selection. Students will be able to demonstrate a wide variety of dynamics and expressive playing.
