Description

The Mexican folksongs and dances chosen for this arrangement are among the most popular and familiar. A cheerful, happy Mexican-carefree-style should be established from the opening introduction and continue until the end with tempi light and bright.

Once a comfortable allegro has been established at the beginning it should be maintained until the furioso (measure 93) where tempo and energy should be increased. After a short pause of silence “LAS MANANITAS” (Good Morning) follows as a relaxed contrast. Care should be taken that the andante does not drag. The melodic line should gain a little momentum at the tutti to insure a forward motion to the end.

Two typical and familiar waltzes then follow in the traditional “tempo di valse” style. In conclusion, the Polca Mexicano “Jesusita” requires a bright march tempo which may be slightly increased in the “Mexican Hat Dance” the short 6/8 finale.

The mallet instruments will add to the Mexican flavor of the arrangement but are not essential in performance.
