Description
The Revival March was the first published work of John Philip Sousa. However, the youthful Sousa first wrote this work for full orchestra. It was premiered with the Philadelphia orchestra in 1876, and received very good reviews in the Philadelphia newspapers. Later, Sousa revised the orchestra work into a march for band. This march was written four years before Sousa had ever conducted a military band, but it gives an indication of his vigorous style. The Revival March incorporates the old hymn, Sweet By and By as the main theme in the trio section.
Harold Gore has revised this old march in a concert march. Several contemporary instruments have been added or revised such as 1st and 2nd C Flute & Piccolo, Bass and Alto Clarinets, four Horns in F, Mallet Percussion and Timpani. Mr. Gore has tried to remain true to original composition, but has changed ranges on several instruments such as the woodwinds and Cornets to make them more playable by young musicians. This march has been out of print for many years and most of the bandsman and directors of today will probably never have heard this old, but great march. We are pleased to bring it back into the repertoire of bands all over the world.
