Description
The Canciones y Sones de Mexico was commissioned by Spring High School Wind Ensemble (Gabe Musella, conductor) for performance at the Midwest 2008 music clinic in Chicago, Illinois.
The work is a ‘rhapsody’ for young bands with frequent changes of style, meter and tempi. All solos and double reed parts have been generously cued. Although there is no ‘program’ for this composition, it is intended to capture the sights, sounds and feeling of the Mexico I have lived in for the past 8 years. The work uses both folk songs and original material.
The percussion parts are divided into 4 parts plus Timpani
Percussion 1 – Bells, Snare Drum, Bass Drum and Maracas
Percussion 2 – Suspended Cymbal, Guiro and Claves
Percussion 3 – Chimes and Xylophone
Percussion 4 – Triangle, Claves, 2 Floor Toms, Bells and Chimes
Note: Percussion share Bells, Claves and Chimes. The idea is to have the percussionist perform on a variety of instruments within their individual part.
