Bold Fantasy

Description

Bold Fantasy was commissioned by Directors Choice Music Festivals for the Grisham Middle School Band of Austin, Texas, Betty Bierschenk-Pierce and Tracey Redus, conductors, to commemorate their selection to perform at the 2003 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. The work draws its material and inspiration from the hymn Be Not Afraid by Bob Dufford. It was a favorite of Victor Gregory Bierschenk, Betty’s father, to whom the work is dedicated. The music is divided into five sections. Although the hymn is never quoted in its entirety, rhythmic fragments from the verses and melodic material from the refrain are developed to create this journey through the powerfully descriptive images of the text.
