Five Contrasts

Description

Written for the South Brunswick Junior High Band (Southport, NC), Steve Skillman, director, the movements of Five Contrasts are each designed to teach a different musical concept.

• Fanfare-explores contrary motion and canon as well as the harmonies these compositional devices create
• Static-most abstract movement with a melody comprised of the most dissonant intervals: minor 2nd, major 7th, and tritone
• Reflections-a gorgeous ballad-like texture that allows for several solo instruments
• Jingle-a study for young musicians, in rhythm and meter changes. Throughout this movement a 3/8 bar is inserted to keep the players “on their toes”
• Epilogue-a musical finality to the work
