Harnett County Celebration

Description

Harnett County Celebration was written for the Harnett County, North Carolina All-County Band in 1984. Having been the first conductor of that band in 1983, I was asked to return the following year to conduct again. In honor of the event, I wrote this short, march-style overture. My idea was to use the formal structure of a march with an introduction, first strain, trio, “dogfight,” and return, but incorporating 20th century harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and meter changes all at a level playable by a good junior high band.

This work is dedicated to the band directors of Harnett County: Joe Edwards, Dan Greider, John Hudson, Warren Powell, and Bill Sutter.
