Dance of Fire - Quincy C. Hilliard

Description

Dance of Fire is a spirited composition celebrating the Japanese culture. Although no authentic folksongs were used, the composer’s intent was to capture the excitement, style, and flavor of this unique culture. The opening measures should be played in a bold and flamboyant manner. It is extremely important that the gong and cymbals be heard. The articulations should be played as written in order to add excitement. The Andante must be played in a flowing, singing manner to be effective. Care should be taken to observe all dynamic indications. At m. 69 and 70 the brassy effect in the horns and trumpet 3 should be heard above the band. Measure 83 should bring back the exciting bold and flamboyant style as at the beginning of the work.

Dance of Fire was commissioned by the Texas Private School Music Educators Association for the TPSMEA All State Band. It was premiered with the composer conducting on January 30, 1993 in Dallas, Texas.
