Description
Tchaikovsky’s set of Variations on a Rococo Theme, op.33, was completed in December, 1876. The Variations were dedicated to the famed cello virtuoso Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, who was Tchaikovsky’s friend and colleague at the Moscow Conservatory.
In the catalog of Tchaikovsky’s works, the Variations on a Rococo Theme are preceded by the symphonic fantasy, Francesca da Rimini, op.32. They are followed by the Valse-Scherzo for violin and orchestra, op.34, and the D major Violin Concerto, op.35.
The first performance of the Variations occurred in 1879, at a concert by the Allgemeine Deutsche Musikverein in Wiesbaden, Germany.
