Description

Russian Rhapsody No. 1 comprises four folk melodies from Russia which are virtually unknown in the United States. They have been set for string orchestra with harp, and should be approached in a romantic style. The work opens with a quiet lullaby which grows in intensity, culminating with one wild “aleatoric” measure, and then dies away. A lyrical, somewhat melancholy song follows, with the melody first in violas and celli, then passed to the violins.
A slow, waltz-like song in 6/8 meter comes next. It should have a flowing style, perhaps bringing to mind ice skaters during St. Petersburg’s “White Nights.” A soaring countermelody is fun for violas and celli. As the waltz music fades away, a little quadrille begins slowly and quietly using pizzicato strings, with the harp bringing to mind a balalaika. As the tempo picks up, the tune takes on the character of a folk dance, ending quietly (except for the last note) with a singing cello obligato.
