Description
Victimae was commissioned by the Jonesboro (AR) High School Band, Geoff Carlton, director. It is basically a fantasia on the ancient Gregorian chant Victimae paschali laudes. The melody is presented in a variety of contemporary settings and finally heard as a Medieval discant organum and Renaissance motet in the final section of the piece.
The percussion background to the flute solo should be constant and free, but not loud; a very mysterious sounding texture. Remember that the eighth note remains constant as the tune shifts between meters starting at measure 56.
