Rivers

Description

Rivers was commissioned by the Bald Knob (AR) High School Band, directed by LaDonna Gibson. The piece is in ABA (slow-fast-slow) form.

Rivers provides a challenge to the ensemble by throwing the melody through constantly changing time signatures. This uneven feeling reflects the mood of a freely flowing river. Maintain an even tempo through the fast section and take advantage of the wide variety of wind and percussion colors within this piece. Be aware of the tempo changes in the last slow section. Never let the percussion ‘ dominate the ensemble sound; the active percussion parts in the fast section should help provide momentum to the winds.
