Description
The history of Avignon, a city of southern France on the left bank of the Rhone River, goes back to Roman times. It was also the seat of the Popes from 1309 to 1377 and owes much of its architecture to this period. The folk song Sur te Pont D’ Avignon (The Bridge at Avignon) on which this piece is based refers to a famous, unfinished bridge that extends only halfway across the River!
The music has four main sections depicting Dawn, Morning Commotion, Afternoon Quiet and Evening Vitality.
