Description
As the title suggests, “Shapes and Forms” is absolute music as opposed to descriptive or program music. Its appeal lies in sensations of tone and structure. Nothing pictorial is intended; its effect on the senses is immediate.
NOTE TO CONDUCTOR
There is much dissonance through-out. The dynamics will indicate the relative importance of each part and should be carefully observed. The fermata in bar 7 should be not less than the duration of two beats to allow the diminuendo to be fully effective. The composition is scored for 6 trumpets, 4 french horns, 6 trombones, 2 baritones and tuba but may also be performed by the entire brass ensemble.
Instrumentation: 3 Bb Trumpets, 4 Horns in F, 2 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Baritone, Tuba
